The charm of the past and of Le Dévoluy mountains...
With four villages located to the four corners of the massif, Le Dévoluy combines the charm of the past and the modernity of the resorts.
The village of Saint-Étienne-en-Dévoluy is located at the foot of Superdévoluy resort, and it is particularly proud of its plateau de Bure, which is home to the biggest observatory in the North hemisphere: the Millimetric Radio Astronomy Observatory. Up there, the air is extraordinarily pure and scientists listen to the stars... The panoramic views from the Pic de Bure are well worth making the detour for: when the weather's clear, you can admire the Écrins and the Vercors massifs, as well as the Lubéron mountains to the south! But be warned, you have to work for the privilege: it'll take at least 3 hours on ski touring, and it's a 7-hour-round journey in summer.
10km away from both Superdévoluy and La Joue du Loup resorts, the village of Saint-Disdier hosts Mère-Église Chapel, one of the oldest chapels in the Hautes-Alpes, which dates from the 11th century. Built by Cluniac monks, it offers an illustration of monastic life in a mountain environment. Every summer, Mère-Eglise rings out with the sound of concerts taking place as part of the "Musique en Dévoluy" Festival!
Close by, you'll find a range of starting points for hiking in the summer: "Les énigmes de Clapucine" (Clapucine's puzzles) to enjoy as a family, the Gillardes springs, the Pellafol canal, the Gicons climbing site...
The village of Agnières-en-Dévoluy is located nearby the slopes of La Joue du Loup resort. It has a bistro labelled "Bistrot de pays", and is the starting point for many hiking trails in the summer that will make you travel up and down Le Dévoluy's footpaths. Don't miss out the famous straw bale-throwing every August 15th!
The southern entry point to Le Dévoluy, La Cluse is a real haven of peace. You’re sure to be enchanted by its authenticity and small heritage. This village is located just a few kilometres away from le Col du Festre, which is the starting point for a range of ski touring, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails! If it's a spot of swimming you're after, then you’ll enjoy the picnic area by the riverside.
